Final update to the Critical Areas Ordinance

During the Renton City Council meeting on Monday, December 8, the Renton City Council passed the updated Critical Areas Ordinance. Thank you to everyone who provided feedback throughout the process.

The updated ordinance incorporates changes that align with state regulations, reflect the best available science, and public feedback. These updates provide clear guidelines to continue protecting our critical areas that are essential to Renton’s environmental stewardship and infrastructure protection.

The approved ordinance has been sent to the Washington State Department of Commerce in accordance with RCW 36.70A.106 for state agency review before publishing to the public. The new ordinance is anticipated to be codified in January 2026. While the adopted changes are being added to the code, you may view the signed ordinance here. For questions about how the updated standards apply to your specific project, please check in with city staff before submitting your application.
