What is is required for a trench excavation for pipe installation?

The new water mains and storm drainage pipes will be installed within the roadway using an open-cut excavation method.

Typical excavation depths will range from 6 to 8 feet. Approximately 200 feet of deeper excavation, up to 18 feet deep, will occur near the Highlands Reservoir site between Monroe Avenue NE and Olympia Avenue NE.

Trenches will be backfilled temporarily patched with asphalt trench at the end of each workday.  Steel plates may also be used to temporarily cover open trenches as needed.

Why are new fire hydrants being installed?

New fire hydrants will be installed to provide fire protection coverage for properties along NE 12th Street.

In addition, new copper water service lines will be installed up to the existing water meters. Any disturbed curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and landscaping areas will be restored following construction.

Final roadway restoration will include a full-width asphalt overlay of NE 12th St and impacted intersections.

What is PSE doing as part of the project?

Puget Sound Energy (PSE) will relocate portions of existing gas mains and underground power lines throughout the project area in preparation for the city’s construction work.
