That’s a Wrap: The End of the 2026 Legislative Session
The 2026 legislative session, while short, had its challenges, but ultimately, we left with several wins for Renton. The session started on January 12 and ended on March 12. We focused our efforts on four priorities:
Public Defense
Transportation and Regional Connectivity
Public Safety
Shared Revenues
Some of the wins!
Our government affairs team delivered big wins: securing funding for both the Stabilization Center and the SE 168th Street Bike Lanes/Safe Crossings. These investments directly advance our public‑safety priorities.
The city was successful in preserving most state-shared revenues and expanding local revenue flexibility. Expanding local revenue flexibility gives the city more tools to manage its budget responsibly.
Movement within Public Safety
New state regulations and polices for public safety were passed. These included:
New regulations on the usage of Automatic License Plate Readers (ALPRs)
New exemptions from the Public Records Act (PRA) disclosure for ALPR data
New standards for police chiefs and usage of police volunteers
New regulations on the usage of face coverings by law enforcement officers
However, no new funding or policies were established regarding public defense/indigent defense services that we advocated for.
Continuing to Advocate for the Local Access Our Residents Deserve
Transportation remains a priority for Renton. As our community grows, access to reliable transportation must grow with it. We will continue to advocate strongly for transportation projects and funding that deliver real benefits to our community.
