What can I expect when night work occurs?

Night work to begin as soon as Monday, August 11, and is expected through the end of September, beginning at the intersection of Airport Way.

All entrances and driveways are expected to remain accessible throughout this work. Nearby residents can expect noticeable noise, vibration, and necessary idling. Work will be from Monday evening through Friday morning each week.

Crews will minimize construction and noise impacts by:

    • Notifying impacted neighbors at least three business days in advance
    • Working with crews to manage noise when possible
    • Replying to questions and concerns in a timely manner
    • Conducting work with higher noise impacts earlier in the evening

What activity can be expected during the project?

Crews are actively working on sidewalk, curb, gutter, driveway, and street improvements, including pouring and curing concrete. During this work, you can expect:

    • Noise and vibration. Crews will aim to complete as much noisy work during the daytime when possible. Occasional nighttime work will be needed to close multiple lanes during the street and sidewalk upgrades. Crews plan to complete their noisiest work as early as possible during early evening hours, though some of this noisy work may continue into the late night and early morning hours.
    • Street, sidewalk and/or lane closures and detours. Driveways may need to be temporarily closed when we upgrade the sidewalks that cross driveways on Rainier Ave S. Access in and out of driveways will be maintained. If driveways need to be closed for upgrades, our team will notify individual properties in advance.
    • Traffic impacts. Please plan ahead and give yourself extra time when traveling. The city will include weekly closures on this webpage and the weekly newsletter to help travelers plan ahead.
    • Dust and debris
    • Crosswalk and sidewalk closures and detours for people walking and biking

When will the project be complete?

Rainier Ave. S. Phase 4 is scheduled for completion fall 2025.

Why are crews working at night?

Thousands of cars, trucks, and buses travel along Rainier Ave. S. during the day, which limits the crews ability to work safely along the corridor. Our crews will work at night when traffic volumes are low to ensure they can safely complete their work and limit impacts to the traveling public along this important corridor.
