What is the Renton Skatepark?Located in Liberty Park near Renton&rsquo;s civic core, the Renton Skatepark is a popular, well-loved facility used by skateboarders and other wheeled users. Completed in 2001 on the site of a former community pool, the 8,400-square-foot park features a mix of bowls, half and quarter pipes, and elements that mimic a street skating environment. The Renton Skatepark was designed with Scott Yamamura, a local pro, and by over 100 members of the public through design workshops.The skatepark also includes skateable public art funded by the Renton Municipal Arts Commission through the City&rsquo;s &ldquo;1% for Art&rdquo; program. These distinctive features pay homage to the adjacent Cedar River and add a unique, creative character to the space.<hr>What are the current needs?Since its original construction nearly 25 years ago, Renton&rsquo;s population has grown significantly&mdash;and so has the sport of skateboarding. While recent repairs addressed surface-level issues like concrete cracking and chipping, the skatepark is in need of a more comprehensive renovation to meet current community needs and support the future of skateboarding in Renton.<hr>Why now?Renton&rsquo;s Parks and Recreation Department is currently updating its the <a href="https://yourvoice.rentonwa.gov/pros" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan</a>, which sets a long-term vision for parks and recreation citywide. As part of this effort, we&rsquo;re evaluating future improvements to Liberty Park, and the skatepark is a key piece of the puzzle.Now is the time to think big about the future of the Renton Skatepark and how skateboarding is supported elsewhere in the park system. With community input, we can create a strategic plan for skatepark renovations and explore opportunities for new wheeled facilities throughout the city.<hr>Get Involved!We want to hear from you!
