In 2025, we asked for resident feedback on waste services ahead of developing a new waste collection contract for 2027-2037. The city wanted to hear from residents to ensure that the next waste services provider will best serve the needs of residents.

What We Heard

We released a 17‑question community survey in April 2025 and received 244 responses from residents. The priorities from the community focused on:

  • Reliability
  • Affordability
  • Strong recycling practices
  • Expanded no-cost collection services
  • Sustainability
  • Locally-based customer service center

Following a comprehensive and competitive selection process, several council discussions and presentations, and community feedback, Recology was selected to be Renton's next waste services provider.

What New Services Are We Getting?

  • A return to monthly city billing of waste services, giving residents one place to ask questions and pay all city utilities
  • Refreshed garbage and compostables carts meeting new state color standards
  • No‑cost curbside collection of textiles and small electronics
  • Expanded recycling options for apartment and condo residents
  • A new fleet of 21 renewable natural gas-powered collection vehicles, supported by all-electric supervisor, outreach, and cart delivery vehicles

What Won't Change

Many of Renton’s most valued waste programs and services will continue, including:

  • Clean Sweep program (1 free extra garbage collection per year)
  • Unlimited recycling and food & yard waste collection
  • Every-other-week garbage and recycling service* with weekly compostables collection
  • Curbside bulky item pickup
  • No-cost holiday tree collection

* Garbage and recycling service will continue to be weekly for apartment and condo residents

    Which services do you want from your next waste collection provider? Currently, the city contracts with Republic Services, but the city is seeking a new waste collection contract, starting in 2027. Before selecting the next provider, the city wants to hear what residents want from their waste services to ensure that the next provider will best serve the needs of residents. This survey is only open to single-family households.
