Artistic Storm Drain Cover Initiative

Back in May, we partnered with the Renton Municipal Arts Commission and invited the public to leave their mark on the city by submitting original designs for storm drain covers, or “manholes.”

Our goal is to design, create, and install eye‑catching storm drain covers that spark curiosity about stormwater, brighten public spaces with unique artwork, and help strengthen local pride and identity.

What are storm drain covers?

Sometimes referred to as a 'manhole', these covers are found almost everywhere. They’re part of underground utility systems, and often are the only part of those systems that people can see.

While having no impact on how these drains function, the design will serve as a fun and creative way to engage the community about our stormwater systems. Making them more noticeable, long-lasting, and serve as a continued reminder that our stormwater system and infrastructure are important for the health and well-being of our community.
