SW 43rd Street will be repaved from the western city limit to the SR 167 ramps, excluding existing concrete sections. The project includes upgraded curb ramps for improved accessibility, refreshed lane striping and pavement markings, updated traffic signal detection, and adjusted utility covers. Drainage improvements will add new stormwater structures along the corridor and a new system at the Lind Avenue SW intersection to reduce standing water.
Background
SW 43rd Street is a major east–west principal arterial carrying approximately 30,000 vehicles daily across five to six lanes. It serves as a key connection into the Tukwila Regional Growth Center and is designated as a T-1 truck route, supporting both commuter and freight movement.
The corridor provides direct access to SR 167 and connects to major destinations and employment centers, including Valley Medical Center, IKEA, Costco Wholesale, and Southcenter Parkway. It also functions as an important transit corridor, supporting an all-day route along East Valley Highway as well as a Demand Area Response Transit (DART) service linking Southcenter Parkway to the Fairwood neighborhood.
Resurfacing this roadway will improve the overall condition of the pavement, and the project will extend the pavement life of this key east-west South County corridor that connects Tukwila, Renton, and Kent.
Funding
The project is funded by TIB (Transportation Improvement Board) and City funds.
