March 10 Recap
Sartori Speed Study
- CAO VanValey spoke about the speed study completed by the Police Department three years ago. The study reported 66 total accidents over three years, all occurring outside school hours. Of those 66 accidents, four were attributed to distracted driving.
- Speed studies record drivers’ speed over the course of one to two weeks.
-
VanValey shared there are two types of speed zone beacons (or, flashing beacon signs). The first includes a camera operation only when school zone beacons are flashing (during school hours); drivers who exceed the speed limit during those times are ticketed. The second flashes 24/7 but does not take photos or issue tickets to drivers exceeding the speed limit.
-
Question: is it possible to have a flash back sign that does both?
- No, these are parameters provided outside our jurisdiction.
- Residents are invited to provide their input on the city's Safety Action Plan here: Comprehensive Safety Action Plan | Your Voice Renton

Loud Undetermined Noises in Renton neighborhoods
- Multiple attendees shared about loud noises heard in their neighborhoods, source is unclear.
-
Question: if they are fireworks, can the person lighting them get in trouble?
- A police officer would need to witness an individual lighting off the fireworks in order to issue a reprimand.

Moratorium on Detention Centers
- Residents have requested a moratorium on detention centers. Other cities have implemented them, CoR staff is monitoring to figure out if this is addressed at the state level.
Drone as First Responder Program
- Renton is one of the first cites to utilize drones a part of first response plan. RPD drones provide real-time aerial views to help officers respond faster, make safer decisions, and manage emergencies more effectively.
- Drones reduce the risk to officers by allowing them to assess dangerous situations from a distance.
- VanValey shared a story of how the Police Department used one of their drones recently to respond to a call. The drone allowed officers to safely assess the situation, gain insight on circumstances, and de-escalated the situation.
-
Question: Are there local requirements for these drones?
- Yes, Renton follows FAA laws and complies with no-fly zones above the Renton Municipal Airport Taxiway.
City's New Waste Contract
- At the March 9th Council Meeting the City Council voted for Recology to replace Republic as the solid waster provider starting in 2027.
- Public Works Administrator Martin Pastucha shared the selection process – the city issues a Request for Proposals, public input is gathered, and these needs are reviewed by Subject Matter Experts who make a recommendation to council. Council then votes on the new contract.
- Pastucha shared information on fines incurred from the Republic strike in summer 2025.
- Pastucha also shared that in Republic’s last contract with the City of Renton, the company was asked to complete outreach to multi-home units and businesses. Republic reached only 8% of that population in Renton, while focusing the majority of their outreach in neighboring cities.
- Recology's contract has addressed this issue, and they will perform outreach to those multi-home units and the business community in Renton specifically.
- With Recology as Renton’s waste provider customers will be transitioned to the standard bins at no cost.
