The Logan Festival Street Project
It’s been an exciting summer in downtown Renton with the creation of Legacy Square and redesign of Piazza Park. From World Cup watch parties and concerts, to movies, art, and community gatherings, we’ve enjoyed seeing people gather and connect in downtown.
One of the things we’ve especially enjoyed is seeing what happens when Logan Avenue S is closed to traffic and Legacy Square and Piazza Park feel connected as one larger gathering space. The experience has us thinking about what’s possible for downtown Renton and not just at Legacy Square, but along the streets and public spaces that connect our downtown.
City staff are exploring new ways to create more flexible, vibrant public spaces in downtown Renton through the creation of a Festival Street on Logan Ave. S between S 2nd Street and S 3rd Street. The concept would transform a portion of the downtown streetscape into a space that can accommodate festivals, markets, performances, community gatherings, outdoor dining, and other special events.
The Logan Festival Street Project is focused on creating a more inviting downtown experience while giving local businesses, artists, and community organizations new opportunities to activate the space. Planning and community engagement will help shape how the future Logan Festival Street could look and how it can best serve downtown Renton.
Project Background
The Civic Core Vision and Action Plan (CCVAP) identified this portion of Logan Avenue South as an opportunity to create a “festival street,” which is generally considered to be a public right-of-way designed and designated for recurring temporary closure to vehicular traffic, allowing for pedestrian-oriented special activities. This concept aims to create a vibrant area that encourages community engagement and social interaction within the Heart Block while improving pedestrian safety.
The CCVAP was adopted in 2018, prior to the recent establishment of Legacy Square. With the redesign of Piazza Park and the conversion of The Pavilion (historically used as an event space) into a year-round food hall, the Heart Block is anticipated to become a destination for daily visitors and have significantly more capacity for large events.
Project Status and Timeline
City staff are in the very early stages of this project and will spend the next four to five months creating conceptual design alternatives, providing analysis of the alternatives, and engaging the community for feedback. Once a conceptual design is chosen, city staff will begin drafting plans that will be used for construction, and seek outside funding sources, such as grants, to help offset construction costs.
Ways to Engage
In the coming months, city staff will host stakeholder Open Houses and utilize opportunities to be downtown for face-to-face interactions with the community.
