Welcome to the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan update project!

Parks, open space, and recreation are essential to Renton’s vibrant and healthy future. Every six years, the Parks and Recreation Department collaborates with the community, partners, and stakeholders to update Renton's Parks, Recreation, and Natural Areas Plan. As part of this update, we're also renaming it the "Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Plan" (or PROS Plan).

This PROS Plan update will assess the current state of our facilities and programs, incorporate community input and feedback, identify service gaps, and propose strategies, projects, and programs to address those gaps. These strategies, along with a prioritized capital improvement plan, will be finalized in the PROS Plan, which we aim to complete and adopt in early 2026.

What's Guiding this PROS Plan Update?

As Renton’s population grows and changes, so do the challenges and opportunities in supporting community well-being. In late 2025, the Parks and Recreation Department developed a new mission statement, guided in part by the National Recreation and Park Association’s (NRPA) three strategic pillars and aligned with park investments in the 2025–2026 biennium.

Parks and Recreation Mission: To provide exceptional parks and recreational opportunities that enrich the health, wellness, and quality of life for all Renton residents, while ensuring equitable access and preserving our natural resources and city’s history.

As part of this PROS Plan update, the mission statement, as well as the programmatic vision and goals for the future, will be revisited and refined.

Where Are We Now?

PROS Plan Development Underway! Work is actively underway on the updated PROS Plan, which will capture the process behind the update and dive into key findings such as community needs, park conditions, and recommendations for meeting those needs over time.

So far, we’ve taken a close look at our current park system, programming, revenue streams, and other important factors to understand how well Renton’s parks and recreation system and program is serving the community today. This analysis, paired with the significant feedback we’ve received through a robust community engagement process, will guide recommendations for both short- and long-term investments, along with funding strategies to support them.

All of this work will come together in a draft plan, available for public review in fall 2025.

The renton skatepark has always gave people living in apartments and with there parents a place to go to outdoors. Ive learned new tricks there and relearned old tricks. It also gives people an opportunity to socialize with others. I remember when it was built i was 18 and it was the funnest place to go to that is free.

Of all the parks in the city this one is by far the least used and least known about, and as a result the most poorly maintained, large stretches are close due to tree root damage, a small section is completely overgrown and unusable, and the boardwalk is still damaged from the fire a few years ago. I hope this particular trail and park can get some much needed attention in the future.

    Liberty skateboard park

As a lifelong resident of Renton, I have spoken to multiple mayors and multiple councils, and three heads of the Parks Department over multiple decadesto create and maintain more skateboard parks in Renton. The 2006 Tri park master plan was worked on by many local skateboarders. We were promised and had planned for a couple of new skateboard parks in Renton. for some reason, they were just removed from the plans as stated in the master plan two decades later we’re going through the same process all over again in the pros plan. why are we spending money on new...
